Spring Cleaning Tips for Patio Furniture Cushions
Winter is drawing to an end, which means it’s time to get your patio and deck furniture in tip-top shape for cookouts and times spent with family and friends outdoors. During fall and winter, your cushions have probably collected their share of dirt, dust, and other debris, requiring a good cleaning before use in the weeks ahead. However, rather than using potentially harsh cleaning chemicals or abrasive pressure washing on your furniture, we recommend a simple solution of dish detergent and water for a thorough cleaning that won’t leave you needing new cushions in a season or two.
Instructions for Cleaning Cushions
To wash your cushions, first determine if the cushions have removable covers that can simply be thrown in the washing machine for a quick rinse. If not, mix a solution of ¼ cup of mild dish detergent with 1 gallon of warm water. Simply scrub your cushions with a clean sponge and the solution for a clean that isn’t hard on the fabric.
Once you have finished scrubbing the furniture, rinse with your water hose, and position them so that they dry adequately before placing back on your deck or patio furniture.
Instructions for Cleaning Mildew
If you find that your cushions have mildew staining in addition to dirt and pollen, mix a 1:1 ratio of distilled white vinegar to water in a spray bottle, and test on a hidden piece of fabric to ensure it won’t cause fading. Once you're sure that the solution is safe to apply to the rest of cushion, spray the mildew stains, and scrub with a soft-bristled brush to avoid damage to the fabric. Wash with water and allow it to dry.
General Furniture Care
To keep your furniture and cushions looking like new, vacuum them periodically to eliminate dirt that can wear down fabric. Should cushions become wet from rain, place them on edge to speed up drying and prevent mildewing. Also store furniture and cushions during low use times, such as the cold months.
